Lasek - Laser epithelial keratomileusis

Decrease Font SizeIncrease Font Size

Lasek makes a thinner flap than Lasik as it separates the Epithelium only. It may be preferable to Lasik in eyes with a thin cornea. To perform the lasek procedure the surgeon uses a special instrument to mark out the boundaries of the flap on the top layer of the cornea (epithelium). The epithelium is loosened chemically and a flap is then mechanically elevated  to expose the underlying tissue. The excimer laser is positioned over the cornea, and its alignment is carefully checked. The laser reshapes the cornea. The Epithelial flap is then put back into position. No stitches are need for lasek surgery  because the flap bonds so quickly and thoroughly.
